You take something that's familiar and you make it... not familiar. Duh. [[Russian Formalism|Russian Formalists]] were into it. (Actually, so am I. I think there's more to a lot of art than "defamiliarizing" things, but I also think defamiliarization is like a kind of base-line step towards other things it does.)
